Law of Attraction

What if . . .

thinking about something and wanting something actually attracted it into your life? This is the central tenant of the Law of Attraction.

While variations of the Law of Attraction have been around for a long time, it was in 2006 with the release of the movie “The Secret”, and follow up material related to it, with endorsements by Oprah, that really brought the concept into mainstream awareness.

The Law of Attraction is said by its proponents to have its basis in Quantum Mechanics, in which thoughts have an energy power and thus influence events to attract to a person what they are thinking about and intending.

Advocates of the Law of Attraction break it down into four essential elements that are needed to help bring about ‘manifesting’ desire and intent, which is when a person’s wishes and wants are made real.

The four elements are:

  1. Knowing exactly what you want.
  2. Asking the universe to provide it.
  3. Feeling and behaving as if what you want is on its way to you.
  4. Being open to receiving it when it does come.

There have been many concepts quite like the Law of Attraction throughout history, with many in the western world entering mainstream media around the turn of the 19th century, especially in a philosophical circle called the New Thought movement and subsequent Theosophy schools. An inspirational and widely acclaimed book on attracting abundance is Napoleon Hill’s ‘Think and Grow Rich’, which references the Law of Attraction. That book was published in 1937!

While there are a number of arguments questioning the Law of Attraction, there are just as many people who report that it has provided them with what they want. Whether by keeping your mind focused on your goals and thus constantly coming up with ideas from the subconscious on how to achieve them….or actually influencing events as supported by the Quantum Mechanics theory, the Law of Attraction has provided real benefits to many people.
